A Great Loss for the Nation The Tunisian Dar al-Ifta announced on Thursday, October 2, 2025, the passing of the former Grand Mufti of the Republic, Sheikh Hamda Saied. The news was received with profound sadness across the country, marking the end of a life dedicated to Islamic jurisprudence, teaching, and moderate religious leadership.

Academic Journey and Excellence Born on June 10, 1940, in Beni Khiar, Nabeul, Sheikh Hamda Saied was a beacon of knowledge. He pursued his education at the highest levels, obtaining his degree in Sharia and Fundamentals of Religion in 1966. His academic pinnacle came in 1987 when he earned a Ph.D. in Fiqh (Jurisprudence) with a focus on “Conflict Between Sharia Evidence and Methods of Reconciliation,” a thesis that remains a reference for scholars.

A Career of Service Sheikh Saied’s career was a blend of academic rigor and religious service. In 1989, he was appointed as a university professor specializing in the principles of jurisprudence and judiciary. Following the Tunisian Revolution in 2011, he continued his local service as the Imam of the Souk Mosque in Beni Khiar and presided over the Regional Quranic Association in Nabeul, before assuming the highest religious office in the country.
