Berlin International Airport (BER) in Germany announced today a complete suspension of all take-offs and landings due to a severe cold wave that caused the formation of “Black Ice,” resulting in a total paralysis of air traffic.
Freezing Rain Disrupts Runways Official sources at the airport reported that continuous freezing rain has made it impossible to maintain safe flight operations. Despite intensive efforts by ground crews working around the clock to treat runways and taxiways with advanced chemical de-icing agents, the extreme slipperiness continues to prevent the resumption of activity.
Uncertainty Over Resumption of Service The airport management confirmed in a statement that the surfaces remain “extremely hazardous” and unfit for use, noting that a specific time for the return to normal operations has not yet been determined. The resumption of flights remains dependent on improved weather conditions and the success of maintenance teams in securing the runways.
Authorities are urging passengers to contact their respective airlines to verify the status of their flights before heading to the airport, amid the state of anticipation surrounding the German capital’s primary aviation hub.
