Grombalia: Rare Hyena Rescued from Witchcraft Plot; 9 Arrested After 5-Hour Surgery

In a striking incident in the Nabeul Governorate, specifically near Grombalia, a rare and protected Striped Hyena was rescued after security forces foiled an attempt by a group of individuals to use it for witchcraft rituals. The security operation resulted in the arrest of 9 individuals caught in possession of the endangered wild animal.

Details of the Rescue Mission Security units intervened following reports of a rare wild animal being held captive. Upon arrival, they found the striped hyena in critical condition. Coordination between the Nabeul Forestry Department, the General Directorate of Forests, and experts from the El Haouaria Wildlife Center led to the animal’s immediate evacuation. Investigations revealed that the hyena suffered severe injuries caused by illegal trapping, which resulted in significant damage to its limbs—a clear violation of wildlife protection laws.

A Complex 5-Hour Surgery to Save a Life The hyena was rushed to a specialized veterinary clinic, where a medical team led by Dr. Rania Mallak performed a precise and complex surgical procedure lasting over five consecutive hours. The surgery focused on repairing the damaged limbs and treating deep infected wounds caused by the traps.

The efforts were successful, and the hyena’s condition has since stabilized. To ensure its full recovery, the animal is currently being cared for at the Wildlife Breeding Center in El Haouaria, a safe environment tailored to its needs. Forestry officials have reiterated the importance of preserving Tunisia’s natural heritage and urged citizens to report any illegal hunting or wildlife abuse immediately.
