The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Friday, March 13, 2026, the crash of a KC-135 Stratotanker in western Iraq. While four out of the six crew members have been confirmed dead, the incident has sparked a wave of conflicting reports regarding the cause of the disaster.
Claims of Downing vs. Technical Failure
The “Islamic Resistance in Iraq” claimed responsibility for the incident, stating they successfully downed the American aircraft. They further alleged that a second tanker was hit and forced to make an emergency landing at an Israeli airport. Conversely, CENTCOM firmly denied these claims, stating the crash was not a result of “hostile or friendly fire.” An investigation is currently underway to determine whether the crash was due to a catastrophic technical malfunction or other factors.
