A Human-Centric Approach to Aging The Tunisian Ministry of Family, Women, Children, and the Elderly is reinforcing its commitment to senior citizens through the “Family Placement Program.” This initiative offers a dignified alternative to institutional care by placing elderly individuals who lack family support within welcoming Tunisian households. In exchange, the hosting families receive a financial grant and logistical support.
The Financial Grant: 350 TND and More Amidst the economic climate of February 2026, official sources confirmed that hosting families are entitled to a monthly grant of 350 TND. While officials acknowledge that this amount is subject to future increases to better match inflation, it serves as a crucial support for families. Additionally, the Ministry provides extra benefits such as the “Ramadan Basket” and periodic medical monitoring to ensure the well-being of the hosted seniors.
Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Benefit? To ensure the safety and comfort of the elderly, strict guidelines are implemented:
- For the Elderly: Candidates must be at least 60 years old, legally without family support, and free from contagious or severe mental illnesses.
- For the Hosting Family: The family’s monthly income must not be lower than the guaranteed minimum wage (SMIG). Their home must meet health and privacy standards, and no family member should suffer from infectious diseases. A single family is permitted to host a maximum of two elderly individuals.
The Importance of Family Environment Tunisia currently operates only 13 public elderly care centers. The government believes that a family setting is far superior for the mental health and longevity of seniors. Currently, the program supports 435 individuals across the country, including a senior who has remarkably reached the age of 113.
